Two Ingredient Matcha Latte: Why You Should Avoid Mainstream Venders (or really just Starbucks)

If you’re reading this blog post, it’s pretty obvious I like matcha. Matcha is something I have been passionate about for several years, even before matcha became “trendy.” I have made my own matcha latte at home for years, but have tried a few different spins from different companies. 

From my experience, when it comes to most health food stores (or restaurants in your local area), matcha lattes are pretty straight forward. Starbucks, on the other hand, has taken all the healthy benefits out of a matcha latte and has modernized it into a sugar/carb/calorie bomb. No hate towards Starbucks, but their take on the matcha latte is not something I would recommend trying, although it tastes great (why wouldn’t it with 15 grams of sugar?). 


After doing some research, I have discovered there is zero benefit in drinking a matcha latte from Starbucks. Below are the nutritional facts for a Grande Almond Milk Matcha Latte from Starbucks.

Looking at the picture above you can see that the drink is 120 calories, has 17 carbs, and 15 grams of sugar. Give or take on the calories, the carb and sugar content is very alarming. These numbers vary depending on the size you order. The nutrition facts also vary when using different milk, such as whole or 2%.


Below are the nutrition facts for Silk Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk and Thrive Market Matcha Power

My two ingredient matcha latte is simple. Matcha powder and Silk Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk. Looking at these nutritional facts, the max amount of calories is 35 (Matcha powder: 0-5 cals (depending on brand) almond milk: 30 cals), with 0 sugar and 1 carb. It is undeniable that the difference in numbers between my latte and Starbucks is extreme. 


Whether you care about the nutrition facts or not, where to get your matcha latte is something to really think about. 
Enough of my venting session, here is my recipe (which is equally delicious compared to Starbucks)…

Ingredients:
-Matcha powder of your choosing ( I use Thrive Market )
-Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
Ice (optional)

Directions:
-Put a serving of matcha powder in a mug
-Add 1/4 cup of hot water
-Either with a matcha mixer, frother (both pictured at end of post) or fork, mix matcha and hot water until completely mixed

If serving hot:
-fill 1/2 with hot water
-add 1/4 almond milk

If serving cold: 
-add scoop of ice
-add 1/4 water
-add 1/2 almond milk

(These amounts can be adjusted to your preference)
